For Doctors: What Is The Hardest Decision In Your Life

Doctors are always taking decisions, one of the hardest decision for any doctor is choosing his/her medical specialty, It is not an easy decision, it is a career-defining decision cause you are choosing a specialty which will control your life till death and it will be very hard to change it later on.

If you are a medical student, before taking this decision you need to read about all specialties: quality and quantity of the work, number of working hours, relation with the patients, on calls, emergency situations, lifestyle, salary …etc.

One of the tools that can be used before taking this decision is the medical specialty quiz tool that has been announced by Facmedicine the best forum for verified doctors and medical students on the web with 9 million visitors yearly and 1.4 million Facebook followers, I read comments from the doctors who took the quiz and most of them said that the quiz result was the same specialty that they are working in, so if you are hesitating you may take this simple quiz and it may help you.

Another advice, ask your older friends who are doctors, they will tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of the specialty they are working in and this can be very helpful for you.

Another advice, always search in the sub-specialties, it is not only about Internal Medicine and Surgery, every specialty has many sub-specialties so search in it, you may find yourself in one of them, for example may be you don’t like general surgery but on the other hand it is possible you may like one of its subspecialties as: Thoracic Surgery,Colon and Rectal Surgery,Obstetrics and Gynecology,Gynecologic Oncology,Neurosurgery, Ophthalmic Surgery, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Hand Surgery,Sports Medicine, Pediatric Orthopaedics, Spine Surgery, Foot and Ankle Orthopaedics, Joint Replacement, Trauma Surgery, Otolaryngology, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery.

Don’t make massive pressure on yourself, it is never the end, at any point of time it is possible to change your specialty, no one can obligate you to work in a career that doesn’t suit you.

My last advice is try to take some observerships in the specialty or specialties that you are thinking about, living the specialty even for few days can guide you better than anything else.

Finally what I can say for you is good luck, it is a hard decision but at point of time you will feel relaxed when you decide it.
